Bahawalpur board was first a part of Multan board it was working there for long but then as the population increased that board was separated and made an independent board in the year 1977. This board was named as board of intermediate and secondary education Bahawalpur. In the year 1977 this board office was in Multan but then it was shifted to the Bahawalpur in the year 1978 in the year 1978 board conducted its first ever supplementary examination in the year 1979 this board office was moved to daulat khana.

Main objective of the board is to conduct examination for 5th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th class examination and after that providing students with certificates. in 1993 under Education Department of Government it also got responsibility for conducting examinations for OT/CT/PTC and Arts and Crafts. There are also oriental languages in which paper are conducted by the board. Punjab education commission was formed in the year 2005 that was with the main purpose to conduct and monitor examination for 5th and 8th class. There are many government and private schools and colleges affiliated with the board and running under its rules and regulations.

There are many students who appear in examination as regular and other as private students. Board conducts secondary school certificate examination that is matric examination and consist of two parts that is part 1 examination for 9th class and part 2 examination for 10th class. Before it board conducts registration that is conducted in the month of January and these forms are provided to affiliated colleges and also on the online website of the board. After registration these students are provided with roll number slips and date sheets in the month of February and examination are conducted in the month of March and April and many students appear in them and now they are waiting for results that will be announced.
